ASN1

Abstract Syntax Notation 1 (c.f. the Wikipedia)

We needed to be able to handle a subset of ASN1 for Slaps, our lighweight LDAP server.

ASN1 is a way of expressing the syntax of an interface. There are then a number of mechanisms for encoding a given interface. For example BER (Basic Encoding Rules) defines how to encode/decode from octet streams, which is exactly what we get over a socket. It's also possible to encode to XML using the same ASN1 expression, but the XER (XML Encoding Rules) mappings.

The ASN1 specifications are available from the ITU
