Backing up the package state of a host

Using dpkg a list of all the packages installed on a given Debian system can be listed or sent to a file. This list can then be used to recreate the same environment by installing (or uninstalling) applications as listed.

Saving the current package state to a text file

dpkg --get-selections >> qaz

Will put the list of packages into the file qaz.

Restoring the package state from a text file

dpkg --set-selections < qaz

Will set the package selection, and a subsequent

apt-get dist-upgrade

will install (and uninstall) the appropriate packages.
